Family Portraiture

What do I bring

Bring along a few changes of clothing. You may choose to bring something "dressy" for everyone for a more classic look for your portrait. Then if your family is more casual, make sure that everyone has a comfortable casual outfit to change into like jeans, white shirts etc. Don't worry too much about shoes as feet are probably not going to feature.

If it is an event or special occasion? ( birthday, graduation, etc.) , feel free to bring in any special items pertaining to this event such as birthday decorations, birthday cake, candles . A favourite blanket, toy, musical instrument or anything else that will truly personalise your child's portrait is a great idea.

Think about where your portrait may hang

Plan to wear clothing colours that will also compliment
the colours of your rooms decor.

If your portrait is to hang in a formal room you probably will want it to look a little more dressy.  However, fabulous effect can be achieved for your family room by dressing everyone a lot more casually.

A good idea is to plan for your portrait the night before. Lay your clothing out and select colours that will look good in conjunction with your homes decor colours.

We encourage all members of the family to dress in similar colours for group portraits. Co-ordinating clothing colours will enhance the quality of your portraits

Patterns

Neutral colours are always good and the only thing to really avoid in a group portrait is bold patterns and stripes. Avoid busy fabrics that will detract from your face. Solid fabrics or small prints (calicos or small stripes) are good.

Sleeves

Long Sleeves are more flattering especially for female adult subjects.

Fingernails

Watch the fingernails! Be sure fingernails are clean and that polish is fresh. Manicured nails are flattering in the finished portrait on both male and female subjects

If your still not sure what to wear, bring along several changes and allow us to advise you on the day. That way we can also swap and change if necessary during your session to give you the choices of alternative looks.

How much time to allow

We always say that it depends on how well behaved you are!!!

On a serious note though, and for a relaxed time, it is best to plan to be in the studio for around 2-3 hours. This time is required to allow us to work out what you want to acheive with your portraits and for us to get you relaxed enough for you and your family to enjoy the experience.
